Review of Beyond Sausage® by Beyond MeatJ.R. Greene
Ever since Burger King brought into the restaurant the Impossible Whopper® (Impossible Meat) meat alternative products have become relevant. But how do they taste? Are the good for you? These are both very good questions. My mom bless her heart, when she goes grocery shopping and sees special on stuff she thinks I’ll like she will go ahead and get it for me. A couple weeks ago she got me the Beyond Sausage, so I thought I would give it a try.
Water, Pea Protein Isolate, Refine Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil
2% or less of: Rice Protein, Faba Bean Protein, Natural Flavor, Potato Starch, Salt, Fruit Juice, Vegetable Juice, Apple Fiber, Methylcellulose, Citrus Extract, Calcium Alginate Casing
Serving Size: 1 Sausage Link (76grams)
12grams of Fat, 5grams of Carbohydrates (3grams of Fiber) 16 grams of Protein.
From just looking at this I like the macros and I like the ingredients for the most part. For me it’s a little higher in fat than what I would typical want to see but most plant-based alternative meats are higher in fat. My typical fat for the day I keep to around 50-60 grams. If I had two links at 12 grams a piece, it wouldn’t throw my daily macros off. I have never heard of Methylcellulose and Calcium Alginate Casing.
l looked up Methylcellulose, which is a laxative, that adds water to your stools to make movements easier, I believe that makes up some of the fiber in the sausage and probably is a bonding agent. Remember there is 2% or less of Methylcellulose in each link, and the same for Calcium Alginate Casing. What I can gather it is used to entrap the enzymes in plant tissue. (That is a little beyond my knowledge but doesn’t sound bad)
I don’t recommend heating the links up in the microwave when warming up for the first time from a frozen state. They get a funky aftertaste if you microwave from frozen, I’ve noticed this on other Beyond Meat products. If you pan cook them, they are great. Days I don’t feel like meal pepping or I’m in the mist of meal prepping and I have nothing prepared, these are my go-to, with a nice harvest salad.
