On The Road For Long Hauls (Part 2 of 3)
Part Two
When I’m traveling out of town, the concept and goal of eating plant-based proteins stays the same. Some of my tools change up a little but it is pretty much the same principles as traveling locally around town.
Preparation
This is key to not force yourself to make bad decisions when you make stops at gas stations or travel centers. While some travel centers and gas stations are improving their options, I still try to control my own destiny and have what I’m eating in the car with me already.
Depending on the amount of days and hours I’m traveling will affect my setup configuration, but only in the sense of the amount of food I’m bringing. As I’ve mentioned in part one of this three part series I use a Six Pack Meal Bag. Six Pack Bags come with containers that fit perfectly in the Hot Logic Warming Oven. So I will prep enough containers to get me to where I can prep again or to my destination. Fora multiple day road trip I will bring some larger containers filled with my bulk meals to scope out each day. I got mine at Costco’s but any air tight container works, but you can get them on amazon. These work great.
Equipment
As mentioned above, I use air tight containers and the Hot Logic warming oven for warming and eating my meals, but what do I keep my meals in? Obviously I can’t keep a ton of meals in the Six Pack bag. It is not big enough. And their ice packs are good for no more the 24 hours.
I utilize a plug in cooler like this Kaddy Cooler from Kooltran. This is great for multiple of reasons. One it plugs into the cigarette lighter and two if you are staying at a hotel that doesn’t have a refrigerator some of these come with inverters that you can plug into a 110 outlet and now you have a fridge in your hotel room.
Random Thoughts
When prepping out your meals on the road remember you are not going to be very active while driving, I mean you are just going to be sitting all day. So, I prep my meals to be a little higher in protein and lower in carbs and fats, since I won’t be burning much fuel.
I also try to plan a workout halfway through my travel day so I can keep the blood flowing. I keep some gym memberships for national gyms where I know I can get a good workout in, a shower, and a plant-based protein meal. My go to place is Lifetime Fitness.
They have limited amount of plant-based protein options, but they still have options! They have towels and a great locker room that is always clean! I enjoy most of their staff members and their equipment is always clean, new and safe.
