Commitment Over Feelings
Pros Work on Commitment not Feelings
My morning routine is pretty intense for most people, and I hardly ever deviate from it. If anything I get up earlier never later. And that is if my day has an earlier appointment.
Right now my alarm (if I don’t get up before it) goes off at 3:52 am. I finish packing for the day, brush my teeth and take the dogs out. I also make my morning shake with Pr Protein from Nirvana Life Nutrition. Days that I do cardio I’m on the machine by 4:30 and if I ‘m lifting before yoga I’m out the door by 4:15.
I finish my workouts by 7am and then do some recovery and try to be at the warehouse by 8/8:30 were I then make a list of what I need to get done for the day so I can complete my weekly list, and eventually my monthly.
That list is my contract / commitment to myself and to everyone I do work with. And that list is gold. My day won’t finish until that list is complete. Regardless of how I’m feeling, I complete my day before I retire for the day.
They way I look at this list or whatever I committed to for the day, is not what I have to do, but what I get to do for the day. That simple mindset change of thinking will completely change your attitude.
While I’m fighting traffic to get to the warehouse box orders for BFY Life our attitude may be I don’t want to fill orders today, or why can’t someone else fill the orders, do I really need to write thank you notes today? My attitude, because of my commitment to myself and to our company, is completely different. I’m excited when I see an order come in and I get to fulfill it. Or I get to write another thank you note to a new customer for their order. I get to response to questions about our products. I know somewhere someone wishes they could be doing what I get to do everyday, and I won’t take that for granted.
The mindset of being committed to what you have to do versus doing what you feel like doing is a mindset of a champion. Everyone can get stuff done when they are motivated or feel like doing it. But while you are not feeling it, someone else who isn’t feeling it either is doing what you should be doing and they are now one day a head of you. And everyday you wait for motivation or feelings you fall one more day behind everyone else who is grinding.
Also an added bonus if you follow through with your commitments instead of doing things when you feel like it is the following: If you are feeling a little down and out, by doing these small steps and having these contracts with yourself and you keeping them, it is going to improve how you feel about yourself. You feel better when you feel accomplished, and how do you feel accomplished? By accomplishing stuff! Ed Mylett taught me that on his podcast.
So my advice or recommendation is get yourself into a routine and map out what you want to get done on a yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily basis. I like using dry ease boards, and my calendar app on my phone to keep track of what I’m doing everyday. But you need to find a system that works for you. And whatever you commit yourself to, DO IT. Even when you don’t feel it, remember you get to do it, you don’t have to do it.
Be Forever Young.
